Extended intervals

Interval number and interval quality

An interval name combines the number of staff degrees with a quality. The number alone is not enough: a third can be major, minor, diminished, or augmented.

Perfect interval family

Unison, fourth, fifth, and octave: perfect, diminished, or augmented.

Major–minor interval family

Second, third, sixth, and seventh: major or minor, and additionally diminished or augmented.

“Perfect” is an interval quality here. Whether an interval is acoustically just or tempered is a second, separate question.
