Analysis Course 7 · Professional

Four-part cadences as a tuning test

Examine hand-set voice leading, harmonic function, and key character in equal temperament, meantone, and Vallotti.

Station 1 of 5

Start: major cadence T–S–D–T

Begin with the existing hand-set four-part example in third position. The voices move independently, so bass and inner voices are part of the analysis.

Listening task

Play the major cadence in Vallotti. Follow treble, bass, and an inner voice, then listen vertically: which chord carries the greatest internal motion?

🎼 Continuo Setting

Short keyboard realizations with bass line and upper voices for exploring historical temperaments.
